How to Add a Watermark to a PDF — Complete Guide

Watermarks communicate document status instantly — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY, SAMPLE. This guide covers every watermark setting: what text to use, the best opacity for readability, choosing the right angle, and when to use tile mode for full-page coverage.

When to Use PDF Watermarks

Watermarks serve different purposes depending on context. Understanding the right use for each scenario helps you choose the correct settings:

Step-by-Step: How to Add a Watermark

1

Open the Watermark PDF Tool

Visit gsdocseva.com/watermark-pdf.html. The live preview panel is immediately visible on the right side.

2

Upload Your PDF

Click "Choose PDF File" or drag your PDF in. The first page renders as a live preview canvas that updates as you change settings.

3

Set Your Watermark Text

Type custom text in the watermark field, or click a Quick Preset — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY, SAMPLE, or DO NOT COPY. Text updates on the preview immediately.

4

Adjust Font Size and Angle

Default is 52pt at 45° — the classic diagonal watermark. Increase size for larger pages (A3), decrease for dense content. Use 0° for horizontal header/footer style watermarks.

5

Set Opacity

The opacity slider controls visibility. 15–25% is recommended — visible enough to be noticed but not obscuring the underlying content. Use 50%+ only for purely decorative or sample watermarks.

6

Choose Position and Color

Select Center for a single stamp or Tile for a repeating pattern across the full page. Choose color — gray for neutral, red for high-security documents, blue for corporate branding.

7

Download the Watermarked PDF

Click "Apply Watermark & Download PDF". The file downloads with -watermarked.pdf in the filename. The watermark is embedded in every page's content stream.

🔬 Tile Mode Tip: Use Tile position for maximum coverage — the watermark repeats in a grid pattern across the entire page. This is harder to crop out than a single centered watermark and is preferred for exam papers, proprietary materials, and high-security documents.
